Roaming Around – Getting Around

Most of the travelers arrive at the Hong Kong International Airport and simply hire a taxi and zoom off to the city. However, you can avoid this and take the MTR Airport Express. The ride takes about twenty-four minutes to reach Hong Kong and comes with a complimentary bus service that picks up the passengers either from Hong Kong or Kowloon stations and takes them to popular hotels.

The city comes with a well-networked transportation system which makes getting around in Hong Kong fairly easier.

  1. Taxis

Three types of taxis, colored differently, serve Hong Kong. The red ones operate in the urban areas and go anywhere except to the south of Lantau Island and the Tung Chung Road. Green taxis serve the rural New Territories, hence your chances of finding one of these are rare. The blue ones serve on the Lantau island. These taxis come with different fare breakdown. The rides can get costlier if you find yourself in a high traffic area or if you need to cross a water body to reach your destination. While in Hong Kong and the Kowloon Peninsula taxis are easier to board from the street, a request needs to be made, by calling a taxi dispatch, in other areas.

  1. Buses

There are three separate companies that run the network of buses within the territory of Hong Kong. They are Kowloon Motor Bus Company, City Bus and New World First Bus, and New Lantao Bus. Tons of buses, including double-deckers, are seen on the roads of Hong Kong but unless you know which ones to flag down, they are not as good an option. This is so because the buses don’t stop automatically. The biggest advantage of the buses is the fare that though varies depending upon the route, usually ranges from HK$2 to HK$20. Most buses run from six in the morning till midnight. The buses marked ‘N’ run on the nighttime routes. All the companies accept the MTR Octopus Card, a prepaid contactless debit card or exact change while on board.

  1. Mass Transit Railway – Best way to see

The Mass Transit Railway or locally referred to by its initials, MTR, is undoubtedly the best way to see Hong Kong. It covers downtown Hong Kong and the surrounding territories through its extensive above-the-ground light-rail lines and the subway system. The base fare for a ride is HK$ 4.50 and gradually increases depending upon the distance being traveled. You can either purchase a ticket for each journey separately, carry a rechargeable Octopus Card (the most-preferred), or get a tourist day pass. The Octopus card would cost you HK$ 50 and allows travel until the traveler reaches the limit of HK$ 35. The tourist day pass, on the other hand, costs about HK$55 for a day and permits unlimited traveling using all modes of the MTR. The trains start their service from six in the morning till midnight or 1 a.m. depending upon the particular train line. All in all, MTR is a clean, extensive, cost-effective, and efficient mode of transport making it the best way to see Hong Kong.
