The Antalya history dates back to the 2nd century when this city was used as a seaport by the Pergamum King, Attalus II Philadelphus. This seaport was known as Attalia which means “home of Attalos”. This land was given to the Romans by Attalus II Philadelphus’ successor, Attalus III Philometor Euergetes. After the decline of the Pergamum rule, this city became ruler-less and the pirates got hold of this city. Soon this area began to be referred to as the “Pamphylia”, meaning very productive.

At the time of Crusades, this seaport was used by the Palestinian forces as an embarkation point. At this very time, this city was a Byzantine stronghold. During this time, a major development took place in the city.

Kay-Khusraw was a Turkish-Selquj ruler, in the 13th century, his rules captured the city of Attalia. And it was under this rule that this seaport becomes the most important part in the whole region.
Phase 4: Incorporation in the Ottoman Empire
In the 15th century, this city was merged into the Ottoman Empire. It had already been captured by Bayezid I, the sultan of the Ottoman Empire in the 14th century but problems began to erupt when Timur invaded and due to this the incorporation of Antalya into the Ottoman Empire was delayed.
Phase 5: Effects of World War I
World War I did not end in Turkey’s favor and the tripartite agreement was signed in the year 1917. According to this agreement, the Ottoman Empire was to split among the victorious allies and Italy was one of them.
