Getting Around In Cairo

The city that is home to more than 20 million inhabitants, which means that the transport network of the city must be strong and efficient. Cairo is one of the biggest metropolitan cities in the world and that is why worrying about getting around in Cairo is baseless. There are numerous options for people to travel from one place to another in this huge city. Tourists have a wide choice when it comes to choosing a mode of travel in the city. All have their benefits and drawbacks and it is entirely based on the choice of the tourists about how they wish to move around the city.

  1. Efficient Way to Move Around the City: Metro

The Metro network is considered as the quickest way and the easiest way to move around the city. This network runs on three lines that altogether cover the whole city and this makes Metro the best way to see Cairo. These are designed with utmost modernization and are very efficient. The most prominent feature is that these are air-conditioned saving the people from the pollution of the city. The first line starts from Helwan, crosses Tahrir and reaches Al-Marg, the second line goes to Giza and Cairo University beginning from Shubra Al-Kheima and the third line starts from Lmbaba and extends till the Cairo International Airport.

  1. Get Around in Cairo with Convenience: Taxis

One of the most convenient ways of getting around in Cairo via Taxis. They are a bit expensive than the metro but unlike the metro, these Taxis stop right at the destination. The yellow and white metered taxis have been launched in the city recently. These are efficient and reliable but the passengers have to ensure that the meter is running. The older and less reliable versions are the white and black unmetered taxis. In these older version taxis, the passenger must set a price before the ride begins because these drivers might ask for more than the actual price. There is an option of taxis where the taxis also provide guide services. These taxis are comfortable and a good way to move around the city.

  1. The Perfect Way to Travel in Cairo: Tour Bus

When it is asked about what is the best mode of traveling around in Cairo, the answer that we get from most of the tourists is the tour bus. People who have already visited the city accept that the best way to see Cairo is the tour bus. The cost of traveling on a tour bus is higher than all other traveling mediums as it is $100 per passenger, but many attraction fees are included in this rent. Such as the fee to see Pyramids of Giza or Salah El-Din Citadel are included in the cost of the Tour bus. Also, these tour buses drop and pick the passengers from the hotels. This is a perfect way to travel in Cairo as it saves the tourists from the stress of looking for taxis or understanding the complex bus network of the city.

  1. Make Your Own Way and Walk around the City:

Another mode of travel around the city is on foot. It is not a very popular medium of travel as many people consider this city as unfriendly to walking. But in areas such as Coptic Cairo and Islamic Cairo, walking is actually an amazing way of exploration. However, the pedestrians have to be careful as the traffic in the city is complex and not all places are walkable.

  1. Cheapest Way to Travel: Buses

The bus network in this city is very complex. There are three bus types and all three have their own pros and drawbacks. This mode of traveling is the cheapest of all but is not as comfortable as the others. The first one is the public buses which are not at all for the tourists. These buses are overcrowded at all times, even though they cost less than even 1 Egyptian pound, it is a no-go for the tourists. The second type of buses crawling in the city are minibusses found in orange color. These cost of these buses range from 1 to 2 Egyptian pounds. Even these buses are not tourist friendly and pick-pocketing is common in these buses. The third one is the largest bus network in the city that is run by the Cairo Transit Authority – CTA. At all major spots of the city, tourists can find these buses with the CTA logo.

  1. Not a Very Wise Choice for Cairo: Car Rental

A tourist driving a car is the most dangerous thing in the city. The traffic laws and the network is vast and very complex. It is not recommended to the tourists to rent out a car and drive it themselves, no matter how good of a driver they are. Driving is the rental car is not safe and is very risky. It is not a wise choice when it comes to Cairo.
